You know what they say,"Father knows best!" Well, at least in Rome! A dad in order of even his grown sons' and daughters' and a women of the community teaching slaves to work. Both mother and father work in order to feed their family and the fathers live to provide. During the time of Rome, the husbands held well-paid political positions and were the men of the house. He was even in charge of what baby he wanted! A newborn was mostly born in the home and if the father didn't approve of the newborn, it was left outside to toast to death and if the baby was approved, that baby lived life wearing a bulla (A bulla was very important and was used for good luck in hopes that the child would live to be an adult).
If a male child turned between ages fourteen and eighteen, He was given a celebration for becoming a man and was forced to offer his bulla along with his childhood toys and clothes to the gods (to learn more about the gods go to the culture section of this website), but for girls it was a different story! There was no celebration to end the child and their childhood didn't end until they got married.
Females were usually married at the ages between twelve and eighteen. When She was married, she would wear a white toga with a long veil. The groom also wore a white toga along with leather shoes that he shined with animal fat. When the marriage was going on, the event was held in a temple, but they weren't completely married yet, not until the groom's father died. That was just a step into adulthood.
